Land Grabs on Meta Verse

Land Theft Still Occurring Virtually

Ownership of a home and the land upon which it is built is a point of great pride and a symbol of accomplishment and security. For decades, Americans have punched the clock day in and day out to earn an opportunity to call themselves a homeowner, a farm owner, a rancher, etc. Through hard work, dedication, and sound financial habits, one might be able to buy a single-family home for $30,600. If this sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. Americans might have been able to find a home for $30,600 in 1940, however, as of January 2021, the average price of a home is $269,039, an increase of 9.1% over the course of just one year.

Land Theft is not limited to farms or sacred lands.

Corporations take over lands in residential areas meaning land theft is not simply an issue for rural lands and farms. It is well documented that major corporate entities are systematically buying homes, some of which are foreclosures (further blocking the average homebuyer from capitalizing on a bargain) at well over the asking price. For example, as of 2021, the company Invitation Homes held a portfolio of 12,556 houses in Atlanta alone. Many of which were purchased in cash, further eliminating the average home buyer from the bidding process. The profits from such a venture are staggering. According to federal disclosures, the company makes $1.9 billion in rent per year and they are not the only corporation engaged in such large-scale property acquisition.
